The German version of the track was a number 1 hit in West Germany. It also achieved the same status in Switzerland and Austria. David Bowie's "Space Oddity" tells the story of an astronaut who cuts off communication and floats into space. The BBC used it extensively in their coverage of the 1969 moon landing - an odd choice considering the lyrics.

In 1985 he put out "Things to Come" which had a song called "Chill of the Night" that got radio play. I enjoy all his songs, but "Major Tom" gets everyones attention. I highly recommend checking out his other songs, if you can find them. Mike from Santa Barbara, CA- If you like songs about astronauts you should check out an obscure song from the early 80s called "Why Me?" by Planet P Project. It's a great song about an astronaut with second thoughts about what he's doing. From Pauls Valley, OK- I just checked it on YouTube.com.

It's a good video for its time and has interesting lyrics. I personally like the German version a lot better than the English one. I remember this song from when I went to the planetarium I loved this song. And on January 8th, 1984 it reached #1 on the Canadian RPM 100 Singles chart... I saw once source that said Bowie was highly complimentary of this song. One commentator said that it was at that point that Schilling stopped pretending that this song wasn't about the same character.
More Songfacts:
These are all the things we should have discussed alot more as human beings. Our deeper feelings likes dislikes how they made us feel. Had we done that far more often than we did I dont believe we would be in the position we are currently in this culture. Had we spent much more time working hard on trying to sincerely connect with and understand each other on the things we loved and why maybe just maybe we would have made it. But too many of us chose drugs, addictions in general, frightened egos and the obsessant need to "win" at life over connecting regularly with each other on a much deeper level. All these school shootings mass shootings etc etc etc these days exist for a reason.

I always though the song was him leaving for a routine mission to space, and once he got there the thrusters wouldn't turn on. He was "going home", or dying and going home to Heaven or whatever you refer to the afterlife. He knew he was dying and wanted to use his last chance to communicate to "send my wife my love". He drifts off into space and dies due to lack of oxygen, food, and the deep cold of space. Actor William Shatner released a cover in 2011 on the space-themed album Seeking Major Tom.
The outsider artist The Space Lady also covered the song on the 2013 release "Major Tom/Radar Love". This track is actually a reference and a sequel to David Bowie’s iconic late 1960s song “Space Oddity”. It should be stated that “Space Oddity” is also primarily centered on the character, Tom.
The song is themed in a spacecraft setting where it appears Major Tom and his crew are set to return to Earth. However, just as they are about to embark on the journey, he cuts contact with the Earth and interrupts the power on the space ship. "Here I Go Again" was a #1 hit for Whitesnake in 1987, but it was first released in 1982 with the lyric, "Like a hobo I was born to walk alone." "Major Tom" is probably one of the best tracks from the 80s New Wave genre! After listening to this song I decided to pick up Peter's cd and I think almost 80% of the stuff is very good. With his last line being “give my wife my love”, his colleagues and everyone else assumes that he is dead, when in fact he deliberately faked the whole scene so he could stay in Space. The home he frequently mentions is not Earth but Space, which he now feels more attached to.
